Why You Have Pain & How to Resolve It

Have you ever wondered: Why do I have pain?  What can I do to help relieve it?

How you handle pain will dictate how healthy you’ll be physically and mentally throughout your entire life.  But are you handling the pain consciously or ignoring the signs your body is telling you that you need help?

Sources of pain may be from one or multiple of the following six classes:
  1. Physical trauma (i.e. whiplash, sprained ankle, etc.)
  2. Chemical stressors (i.e. heavy metals like mercury or lead, pesticides, hormone imbalance, physiologic imbalance caused by poor sleep, etc.)
  3. Thermal stress (too hot or too cold)
  4. Electromagnetic stress (i.e. sunburn, microwave ovens, wireless networks, etc.)
  5. Nutritional stress (i.e. poor diet)
  6. Psychic stress (i.e. mental and emotional)
Which of the six classes of stress apply to you?  Now, think about WHEN each one of those stresses occurred.

By feeling pain, your body is telling you something. Are you using pain as a source for personal guidance and feedback to create what you really want in life? If not, working with a practitioner/doctor with a strong understanding of pain would be a good idea as each of the six classes of pain sources must be optimized for you to live the pain free life that you want and deserve.

If you are having chronic musculoskeletal pain (i.e. knee, hip, spine, etc.) that is due to the class of pain called physical trauma, then you have inflammation affecting any one or more of the following tissues:
  1. Nerves, veins, arteries
  2. Fascia
  3. Ligaments, tendons
  4. Joint, joint capsule, cartilage, synovium
  5. Subchondral (bone)
If you suffer with chronic musculoskeletal pain, first the systemic inflammatory process must be addressed and then the exact problem structure (nerve, vein, artery, fascia, ligaments, etc.) must be identified for optimal treatment.  There are many options that are not limited to but may include:
  1. Proper breathing (very few people actually breath optimally)
  2. Movement (so many choices… please work with a functional movement therapist)
  3. Specific nutrients to supplement anti-inflammatory diet (specific to the exact structure injured)
  4. Regenerative biology injections (specific peptides, prolozone, prolotherapy, PRP, stem cells, placental matrix, or a number of other non-cellular cytokine therapies)
The regenerative biology injection type of therapies tend to give your body what it needs and thereby negates the likelihood of unwanted long term side effects that can be seen with the more typical steroid injections (though there is absolutely a time for those too).  Nothing is bad or good.  Anything can be a poison in the wrong dose or a healing therapy in the proper dose.  Healing is about prudently identifying the situation well with proper questioning and tools then using the best tools from a large toolbox of healing modalities.

There are so many more options, but the point is that there is hope for those suffering from just about any type of chronic pain.  Which class of pain does your body suffer from and what will you choose to do with it?

If you or someone you know suffers from chronic pain and don't know how to deal with it, please come to the free community event on February 10th at 6pm. I will be talking about the different types of pain, why you have pain, and the many treatment options available for resolving your pain. You can RSVP here. I hope to see you there!

Also, if you have more questions or want to schedule an appointment, please feel free to contact the office at (818) 957-6909.

The New Year & The Gut-Brain Axis

Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed a happy, healthy and fun-filled holiday season. Below are some pictures of our office holiday party. The first one is the OFM team bowling in our ugly Christmas sweaters. Next is Louie and Dr. Anne Kuo - they were the best dressed for our ugly Christmas sweater outfits. And then there's another pic of Louie since he beat us all in bowling and won the prize.  Enjoy!

FREE COMMUNITY EVENT: The Gut-Brain Axis with Kristina Evans, Functional Nutrition Coach on Monday, January 13th @ 6 pm
Kristina Evans was the co-owner and Executive Chef of Rest Farmhouse Inspired in Montrose, California. She now works as a Functional Nutrition Coach, doTerra Wellness Advocate, and AromaTouch Therapist. Kristina has spent the better part of two decades learning how to heal the body from environmental toxin exposure, chronic stress, chronic inflammation, gut dysfunction, and autoimmune disease. Kristina lives in Southern California with her husband and two daughters. She is passionate about food and truly believes it can and will heal our bodies.
The gut-brain axis refers to the bi-directional communication between the gut and the brain. What is happening in the gut can directly impact our brain function and behavior. Science is just now catching up to what our grandmothers have always understood: Take care of your gut and your body will take care of you. Kristina suggests... Take care of your gut and your microbiome will take care of you!
The microbiome, otherwise known as the trillions of micro-organisms that live primarily in the gut, is an integral part of the gut-brain axis. These mighty warriors protect, heal, communicate, aid in digestion, and secrete enzymes that keep our body functioning. To ignore them is to risk major health problems.
Our diet, toxic exposure, and stress all play into the health of our microbiome. We can dramatically improve or impair our microbiome simply by the choices we make. It’s up to us whether we walk in healthy function or dysfunction.
Join us on Monday, January 13th at 6:00 pm at Oasis Family Medicine. Everyone is welcome, and we look forward to seeing you on January 13th!
