Taste of My Own Medicine

Sprain my ankle.  That’s what I did recently, very shortly after my daughter was born. It’s embarrassing to say how it happened, so I’m not going to :)

Needless to say, I could not even walk on my right foot due to the pain, so I had to use crutches.  What was I going to do, given that I needed to help my wife take care of our brand-new daughter?!?  Such frustration!   Now I’ll tell you what I did to heal the ankle at an alarmingly good and quick rate.
  • Calcium lactate from Standard Process.  12 tabs twice daily x 3 days.
  • Magnesium gel from Designs for Health.  Applied topically to ankle twice daily x 3 days.
  • Peppermint essential oil from doTerra.  Applied topically to ankle three times daily x 3 days.
  • Arthrosooth cream from Designs for Health.  Applied topically to ankle twice daily x 3 days.
  • Arnica (homeopathic) from Boiron.  5 pellets under tongue twice daily x 3 days.
  • Epsom salt soaks for ankle.  Once daily x 3 days.
  • Ice & Elevation.  A few times daily x 2 days.
  • Grounding.  This consisted of walking on my lawn barefoot for just a couple minutes x 2 days.
The sprain occurred on a Thursday.  Crutches were used for the rest of that day.  By the next morning, I could actually stand without crutches, and as the day progressed, my ankle actually got BETTER!  The MAGIC HAPPENED when I decided to have Dr. Anne Kuo do a PROLOZONE injection to my ankle!!!!  Immediate pain relief!!!  And lasting too!  By the end of Friday, I was walking almost without even a limp, when just 24 hours earlier I knew that, using just RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) and Ibuprofen, I’d likely be using crutches for at least a few days.  By 48 hours, walking completely normally was 2nd nature again.  I kept up most of the regimen for an extra day just to be sure.

Good to know that a taste of my own medicine tastes good indeed!

So, that’s my new recipe for sprained ankles.  Feel free to use it or share it, though hopefully you won't have to!

  1. RICE might be ok for 24 hrs but I don't believe it's helpful to continue with that. I've read about an alternating hot/cold treatment that lets one return to normal activity levels much sooner than RICE alone. 2nd hand experience with a friend's ankle, direct 1st hand experience with my own wrist. It's somewhat time-consuming and involved than RICE, but seems effective, which is the best thing.

I use arnica pills & gels, Epsom salts, and homemade magnesium oil in my self-care rituals for sore muscles, tired feet, bruises. Glad to hear your ankle is better!
