Fragrance Free

I guess you could say today's subject is a PSA (public service announcement) with a two-fold purpose. One is to educate and the other is to make a request. What is the PSA, you ask? As much as possible, Oasis Family Medicine has made significant efforts to maintain our office as a "synthetic chemical fragrance-free" zone.

It is always our goal to provide up-to-date information to educate you on all aspects of healthy living. Our choice to be a fragrance-free office is not because we don't want people to smell nice. It is simply because we want to provide a safe environment for ALL our patients and visitors. You may or may not realize it, but wearing a fragrance, perfume or cologne to the doctor's office may have adverse effects on those around you. It's possible that is something you have never considered before. Please read on to find out more.

For many people, the choice to avoid fragrances is not necessarily a preference, but rather a medical necessity. The synthetic chemicals in some fragrances can cause chemical sensitivities which trigger medical issues for some people, i.e. headaches, fatigue, and a number of other symptoms. When at all possible, we want to do what we can to minimize or avoid compounding medical issues for our patients. We know our patients appreciate our attention to those seemingly small, little known details that can turn out to be significant when it comes to their health and well-being.

One alternative to the use of traditional fragrances or perfumes is the use of essential oils. High quality, pure essential oils do not contain many of the chemicals that can cause chemical sensitivities that trigger medical issues, so they are a safe alternative for those who do choose to wear fragrances. We choose to diffuse dōTerra essential oils here in our office, especially in the winter season. One oil blend that we use is OnGuard, because of its excellent anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties.

Here at Oasis Family Medicine, our patients are our priority, and we always strive to provide the best healthcare possible. That includes our office environment.

If you are someone who deals with chemical sensitivities, then please know we do our best to provide a healthy and safe environment for your doctor visits.

If you are someone who likes to use fragrances, we respectfully request that you refrain from doing so on the days you come into the office.

We sincerely thank you and want you to know it is very much appreciated, not just by the Oasis Family Medicine staff, but also by our patients!

Speaking of essential oils, please be sure to join us for our next FREE Community Event: Essential Oils workshop - Managing Pain and Inflammation with Holistic Health Coach, Tracy Leventhal on Sunday, May 5th at 2pm.

If you are looking for natural solutions to heal your body, essential oils are a perfect way to start. Learn how to use doTerra oils specifically for pain and inflammation in the body. Download the flyer here, and RSVP to save your seat here. We hope to see you there!

#12 - Smoking

Here is the final installment of the 12 Basic Steps for Anti-Aging Your Brain. I hope this series has been of help to you.

Smoking. It can be a touchy subject. Especially since it involves dealing with nicotine and addiction to it. I'm not trying to dissuade anyone from smoking - that's not my primary goal here. I simply want to provide information on smoking and its health impact, for you and those around you, so you can make informed decisions. The choice to quit or to keep smoking is yours. I do recommend that if you don't smoke, don't start, and do your best to avoid second-hand smoke.

That being said, smoking does affect all of us in a variety of ways. Our society's view of smoking has changed over the years, and many states have enacted laws to restrict smoking in public places. Besides the physical impact of smoking, there is also the economic impact of purchasing cigarettes (or whatever else they choose to smoke). Smokers have health consequences to consider for themselves (and for people exposed to their smoke second-hand).
On average, a non-smoker lives ten years longer than a smoker. That is significant. Which is why I consider these statistics to be equally significant:
  • 1 in 5 deaths is from smoking-related illness and disease.
  • 480,000 deaths per year are related to smoking.
  • 1 in 10 of those deaths is from exposure to second-hand smoke.
Many people don't realize how their smoking affects those around them. While smokers are in direct control of how much and how often they smoke, non-smokers who are subjected to the second-hand smoke don't have that same control. The main course of action for non-smokers is to remove themselves from the environment where they are exposed to smoking, and that isn't always possible.

The good news is this: If you do stop smoking or stop exposure to second-hand smoke, within a year, your body can recover a large percentage (80-90%) of your overall health and lung vitality.

Of course, if you are trying to quit, or if you are around a lot of second-hand smoke, there are things you can do to minimize your exposure or aid in healing your body:
  • Adaptogenic herbs help with the lack of nicotine
  • Taurine assists the lungs in healing
  • Polyphenols help prevent the progression of some diseases
  • Pulse dose (2x/day, 5 days/week) antioxidants
My advice is simple: If you smoke, do it with a friend (this is actually less harmful to your health than smoking alone), but realize that smoking may decrease your longevity. If you don't smoke, don't start. It's been proven that you are adding precious years to your life. Definitely worth it in my book.

Step #11 - Sex

Yes, that's correct, I said sex...

While it's a subject that can be taboo for some, it happens to be one of my favorites ;) I like to describe sex as "remaining as reproductively useful for as long as possible." It is a wonderful method to help you live longer (and have some fun in the process!).

In older men, who have sex twice a week, the health benefits are tremendous, including lower blood pressure, improving the immune system, and reducing the risk of heart attack, cardiovascular disease, and stroke. In older women, one benefit is its effect on DNA. Frequent sex has been shown to protect the telomere (the end of DNA strands) from deterioration, which affects longevity. In other words, having frequent sex will help you live longer! (And it goes without saying... frequent SAFE sex.)

Dr. Alan Maisel, a San Diego cardiologist, conducted a study of the elderly in a blue zone in Acciaroli, Italy, where 1 in 10 people are over 100 years old. His findings prompted him to state, "Sexual activity among the elderly appears to be rampant." Good for them! While these centenarians also have a healthy diet, fresh air, and other variables that contribute to their longevity, having safe sex frequently is definitely a factor.

Many people consider maintaining sexual activity into their golden years as an important measure of their quality of life. For those who are physically active, doing so is simply a part of their overall healthy lifestyle. For those who have physical limitations, however, staying sexually active as they grow older can be challenging. Regardless of where you fall within that spectrum, you can rest assured that having frequent, safe sex has many health benefits.

With that, I say, live long and have fun with sex!
