HELP - We Deserve Clean Air for Glendale

We deserve clean air to breathe and clean energy to power our lives. I am a firm believer that air quality is so important to our overall health. That being said, I want to raise awareness of an important local issue concerning dirty fossil fuel and air quality in Glendale. I hope in doing so, it will inspire you to join in this call to action.

Below is information provided by the Glendale Environmental Coalition concerning this issue. Please note that as of the time of writing this blog, the upcoming Glendale City Council vote is set for February 6th.

The Glendale City Council is considering the plans by Glendale Water and Power (GWP) to expand the dirty fossil fuel driven Grayson power plant located about a mile from downtown Glendale, increasing the plant's air pollution output by nearly 700%.

Imagine adding 90,000 more gas-burning cars to Glendale roads and you start to get the picture. The option to sell extra energy to other utilities may increase GWP's profit margins, but Glendale residents will pay the price through the health impacts of increased toxic particulates in our air.

Also, when California phases out dirty fossil fuel power, Glendale residents will be solely responsible for the remainder of the project's $500 million bond debt.

Health risks include greater risk of asthma, heart disease, kidney disease, and cancer; lowered IQ, neurological degeneration and impaired coordination in children; increased likelihood of dementia in elderly residents. Studies show that natural gas plants have significant negative impacts on the health of local residents.

What you can do to help:

We need a large public turnout to motivate the City Council to vote in favor of pausing the Grayson expansion and commissioning an independent study of clean energy alternatives for Glendale.

The City Council vote is currently set for February 6th at 5:30 pm at Glendale City Hall, 613 E. Broadway Glendale, CA 91206.

I hope you will take this information to heart and answer the call to action to show up and speak up at the City Council meeting.  Be willing to express your concerns for the health and well-being of all of us current Glendale residents and for the health and well-being of future generations to come.

Please watch the video, and as always, please feel free to pass this along!
