Fraudulent Water

News flash:  Water is important for human health.  However, there are so many different waters and water systems out there today.  What is good and what is not?  Read on for a few tips.

Two common water myths:
Myth 1:  Distilled and RO water rob the body of minerals.
Myth 2:  Distilled and RO water are acidic.

Spoiler alert: Alkaline water is a fraud.  The pH of water has little physiologic relevance to humans.  Once it hits our tongue, it is neutralized.  The pH of anything you eat or drink does not matter.  Juice any green veggie and it is acidic, even though that green juice will alkalinize the body because it has lots of ‘alkalinity’.  Alkalinity of something is what matters.  Not the pH.  Think: Apple Cider Vinegar :)

Distillation – Takes fluoride, heavy metals and other inorganic salts out of the water.  Takes everything out of the water except for volatile compounds.  Distilled water is actually OK to drink because the amounts of minerals typically in water are so miniscule to begin with that one should not be relying on any water for their minerals.

Reverse Osmosis – Takes fluoride, heavy metals and other inorganic salts out of the water.  RO does not take volatile compounds out of water.  RO storage tank can become incubators for microbes, so one should drain the storage tank every other day and/or make sure the RO system includes a UV light to kill the microbes.

Activated carbon filter absorption – Removes volatile chemicals like chlorine, chloramines, VOCs (DBPs like THM’s), SOC’s (pesticides, herbicides), tastes & odors, some pharmaceuticals (limited), some personal care product chemicals.  Activated carbon filters do NOT remove any inorganic salts like heavy metals or fluoride (which is what distillation or RO systems will do).

Recommendations:
1) Distiller + Carbon filter (but distiller is typically messy) or
2) Reverse Osmosis + Carbon filter (but RO tank can incubate microbes).

A good brand of carbon filter is MultiPure.  Most others are crap.  Most brands of reverse osmosis or distillation are at least decent, so no brand dropping for those in this blog.

If you want to test your home water, then National Testing Laboratory (NTL) = cheap and good.

Now on to the less defined and more subtle qualities of water.  Water has many dimensions and energetic properties.  So what about quantum vibration, intention, imprinting, sacred geometry, freezing, praising, vibrant vital water vortexors, revitalizers?  I’m definitely not sure about this, however, I am sure that I want to drink healthy water and that there is much that we have yet to learn about water.  As such, I choose to “liven” up the water that I drink and I do this by running it through a filter that simply contains rocks and crystals in it.  That comes after the reverse osmosis + carbon filter.

As always, enjoy the video, and feel free to pass it along!

Cancer Conference Take-Aways

Hi Folks!  Here’s a short video blog briefly summarizing a cancer conference that I attended recently.  The conference was completely allopathic western medicine based.  Now I know some of you are asking what the heck I was doing there, don’t I treat your bodies naturally?!

Well, being up to date on what oncologists are currently recommending is pertinent to my discussions with any patient.  Also, while most of the conference (ok, 99.9% of it) was spent talking about chemo, radiation, and surgery, there were brief moments (~15 seconds) where one oncologist mentioned the importance of the microbiome (gut flora health).  Another 20 seconds on the importance of hyperthermia playing a role in some cancer treatments.  And there was about 1 full minute devoted to electromagnetic field therapy on cancer (used properly it resets the electric potential of cells which is good and can potentiate other therapy modalities).  The most interesting topic from the conference that got a lot of attention/time was on immunotherapy.

Now, of course, they were more interested in developing drugs to treat the immune system, which is great since I will often refer to cancer as SISD (sluggish immune system disease).  What they didn’t spend any time on was how to improve one’s own immune system from a healthy non-toxic way, either as cancer prevention or as cancer therapy.  That’s where focusing on healthy food, healthy water, healthy sleep, and healthy thinking come into play.  I send out enough saying what and how to address those important areas of health focus, so I’m just gonna say, DO THOSE to take care of yourself and prevent cancer from ever affecting you, or at least decrease your chances of getting a cancer diagnosis by about 90-95%.  Think about that... 90-95%!

Three Anti-Overwhelm Actions

Do you ever feel overwhelmed?  Do you feel overwhelmed almost every day?  Either way, here are three actions that will help stop the "overwhelm" sensation.

Start your day organized.  Upon waking and doing a morning routine (like I demonstrated on a 3/17/2016 Blog), make a list to get organized.  Make it simple by listing the 1-3 things that are most important to you to get done today.  Then make a list of people that you are waiting to hear from (at the end of the day contact them if you haven’t heard from them).  Then make a list of the people you must reach out to.  Also, remember your purpose in life and say it aloud or silently to yourself.  Randomness will lead to overwhelm.  Guaranteed.  Do NOT wake up and start checking emails or Facebook.  You WILL LOSE YOUR DAY that way.  Guaranteed.  Set aside time for email and Facebook AFTER doing the aforementioned action items.

Give yourself breaks.  Your brain needs time to rest, recover, and rejuvenate no matter how amazing and productive you are.  Your body is only designed to focus on any one task for up to about 50 minutes or less.  So take a break AT LEAST once every hour, whether it’s a 30-second break or 10-minute break (at least 2 minutes is suggested).  Watch this video to get a 2-minute version of what I do every (ok, ok, most) mornings.  You’ll notice many similarities, but all squished into just about 2 minutes.
  • Drink – About 8 oz. of water.
  • Squats – About 5 with good form and while BREATHING robustly.
  • Breath Scaling – Slow deep breathing moving into FAST deep breathing, then back to slow deep breathing over the course of about 30 seconds.  Keep knees bent so you don’t faint. Burning nose will disappear quickly.  Do it, get used to it, feel amazing!
  • Qigong – Lightly slapping your extremities, shoulders, and low back with slightly cupped hands to open up energy meridians.
  • Tapping/EFT – Lightly tapping on various places with pads of all fingers while silently repeating 3 love-based words about yourself, then ending with saying aloud while tapping on your chest and adding “I am” at the beginning of each word.
Be Mindful.  Life is gonna throw you curveballs every few days, or even every few minutes.  Either way, they will definitely come.  Are you gonna get thrown off kilter by those curveballs, or are you gonna meet them with peace and enthusiasm?  The curveballs that the day throws at you may not always be your choice, but your attitude is.  Developing this skill to meet uncertainty from a place of love takes practice.  So practice it, daily.  As in EVERY DAY and with every curveball.

My Morning Routine – Do it. Love it.

For those of you who have voiced wondering what I do in the morning (and for those of you who haven’t wondered at all), I will share my morning routine as of late.  I love my routine and I’m pretty sure you’ll love it too if you do it, which I highly recommend :)

In short, this routine will give you energy and tranquility to start your day.  You will feel clear headed too, and you don’t even need a bunch of caffeine to do it for you.

First, I start off by drinking 20 ounces of water with 1-2 drops of lemon essential oil added.  It is great to start out your day hydrated, and the lemon aids digestion and fights cancer cells among many other benefits.

Then a 5–7-minute routine that consists of:
  • Squats – About 10 with good form and while BREATHING robustly.
  • Breath Scaling – Slow deep breathing moving into FAST deep breathing, then back to slow deep breathing over the course of about 1 minute.  Keep knees bent so you don’t faint. Burning nose will disappear quickly.  Do it, get used to it, feel amazing!
  • 5-5 Happy Bubble Breath – Slow deep breathing 5 seconds in, then 5 seconds out, with arms expanding and contracting as you think about hugging a big expanding and contracting bubble along with your happiest thought.  Do about 10 of these.  Hint: you should be smiling this whole exercise.
  • Meditation – Ideally at least 20 minutes' worth of silent or guided meditation, as this repeated daily is proven to change your brain in an amazing way.  Can do longer or shorter amounts of meditation too, though.

For an extra kick to your day, do all or just a couple of these exercises every hour.  Everyone can only focus on a single task for up to 50 minutes max, so this is a great way to be able to re-focus every hour and stay on your best game.  I suggest doing just the Squats + Breath Scaling + Qigong + Tapping + 8 oz H2O each hour, as you can do that all in about 3 minutes.  And, trust me, you’ll feel like a million bucks!

Watch the video for further demonstration and explanations of each one.  The video is a little longer only because of these deeper explanations and demonstrations.  Enjoy!

Sweetness

What sugar can I have?  How can I get sweetness into me and still be healthy?  Common questions that I ask myself, because, hey, I HAVE A SWEET TOOTH (or two).

First, below are listed many of the more common types of sweeteners.

Artificial sweeteners: Acesulfame potassium (Sunett, Sweet One), Aspartame (Equal, NutraSweet), Neotame, Saccharin (SugarTwin, Sweet’N Low), Sucralose (Splenda), Advantame.

Sugar alcohol sweeteners: Erythritol, Hydrogenated starch hydrolysate, Isomalt, Lactitol, Maltitol, Mannitol, Sorbitol, Xylitol.

Natural sweeteners: Agave, Date sugar, Fruit juice concentrate, Honey, Maple syrup, Molasses, Cane Sugar.

Herbal sweetener: Stevia.

So which ones are healthy?!  That’s what I want to know.  NOW.

Few or no calories is good, right?

A few thoughts regarding types of sweeteners…

Artificial sweeteners were once upon a time believed to be metabolically inactive but have more recently come under as much fire as sugar itself. A few recent studies suggest that consumption of these allegedly “healthier” sugar substitutes actually increases rather than decreases abdominal fat (Fowler SP, et al. Am J Geriatr Soc. 2015; 63(4): 708–715), and can boost incidence of cardiovascular disease (Vyas et al. J Am Coll Cardiol. 2014) and diabetes (Fagherazzi et al. AJCN. 2013)

Artificial sweeteners also disrupt the gut flora balance (microbiome) per multiple studies which can have a multitude of negative effects on our body (ie way too many to list here).

Sugar alcohols generally have slightly few calories than regular table sugar and are about as sweet as table sugar.

It’s not all about simple blood sugar and insulin.  Leptin matters too!

  • Leptin is a hormone that suppresses the appetite and increases energy metabolism. Typically that’s great!
  • That said, chronically elevated leptin can lead to leptin resistance.
  • So, over time, with constant exposure, the brain blocks the leptin receptors to compensate, diminishing satiety (increasing appetite) and causing cravings, and potentially decreasing metabolism (causing weight gain).

Allulose.  This is a naturally occurring sugar found in small quantities in jackfruit, figs, and raisins, that was recently introduced into the world of food manufacturing.  So, it technically fits into the category of “Natural Sweeteners”.

  • In 2015, Anderson Global Group and Tate & Lyle both announced the launch of allulose in the US, under the brand names ‘AllSweet’ (AGG) and ‘Dolcia Prima’ (Tate & Lyle).
  • Allulose has the taste and texture of regular table sugar and performs similarly in baked goods, but with 90% fewer calories, potentially marking it as the holy grail of sweeteners.
  • However, there is evidence of fatty degeneration and fibrosis in the liver with allulose consumption (Yagi & Matsuo, 2009; J Clin Biochem Nutr. 2009 Nov; 45(3): 271–277).
The bottom line is that the taste of sweetness on the tongue triggers leptin release, no matter which sweetener type is used and regardless of whether the sweetener has caloric value. This response essentially "tricks the brain" into thinking that it is receiving glucose.

I would NOT recommend allulose loaded products as they come on the market.  It is natural, so a tiny bit probably is just fine, but in the doses that are in manufactured foods now and will be in the near future, NOT GOOD.

Based on my expertise in nutrition and medicine, I believe that sugars contained in the whole fruit and vegetables are WAY, WAY, WAY better than anything else because it comes in a healthy relationship to so many other nutrients.  Yes, there is such thing as eating too much fruit.  General rule is, eat more veggies than fruit.  Eat more fruit when it’s in season and less when it’s out of season.  Stay away from dried fruit as it has metabolized itself almost completely pure sugar.  After fruit comes stevia.  I even grow a stevia plant in my garden and during the right season will throw a leaf in the blender to sweeten a smoothie on occasion.

These are all general guidelines and it helps if you know your fasting glucose, A1c, insulin and/or leptin levels to make a truly informed decision on how much sweetness your body can thrive with.

Another consideration, which is often left undiscussed when it comes to low calorie sweeteners, is the adaptation of our society to sweet. At no point in human history have people consumed so many foods with a flavor profile so sweet. All these added sweeteners (whether natural or artificial) are acclimating our taste buds to a flavor profile that reduces the enjoyably of other naturally occurring flavors. Oranges and apples are sweet, but have an apple after a cup of soda and it won’t taste as amazing.

Enjoy the video and, as always, feel free to pass it along!

Creating Your Life of Meaning and Purpose

The world is rediscovering what has been known by humans for thousands of years, that the mind has a profound influence on the state of well-being that a person enjoys.  The mind can be a healer, or not.  It is well documented that the psychological and emotional states of people can affect their immune system, their tolerance of change, and prognosis.  In addition, peoples’ responsibility for their own health, diet, stress management, and physical fitness in relation to their environment can dramatically alter their level of wellness.  The most powerful allies in your establishment of perfect health are to learn to manage your mind, emotions and listen to your intuition.

Joey Klein of Conscious Transformation says that “in today’s world, it is easy to become disconnected from the most important source of our fulfillment — the Higher Self or Soul. The demands of everyday living distract us and we lose our sense of direction in life. Creating time to connect deeply with that spiritual essence within, results in profound transformation so that a life of meaning and purpose can emerge.”

Joey Klein will teach about creating your life of meaning and purpose by connecting to your spiritual essence.  With these teachings, you will learn to:

  • Understand the nature of the Higher Self
  • Develop tools and techniques to overcome self-destructive patterns
  • Experience the divine within yourself
  • Awaken to your full potential
  • Learn to live from a place of love and peace

If you’d like to learn more about how to create your life of meaning and purpose by connecting to your higher self, then mark March 4th on your calendar.  Joey Klein will be speaking at a FREE event on Friday, March 4th at 7:30 pm in Glendale. He will be speaking about many more ways and strategies to connect with your higher intuitive power.

If you really want to dive in, I’d invite you for the entire weekend program that continues on the 5th and 6th. The program is called Spiritual Mastery and is a weekend intensive focused on giving you strategies to step into your higher power on a regular basis.

Because some have asked me and others will wonder, this weekend teaching fits in with virtually any religious beliefs and/or affiliations.

The price of the weekend costs $495.  If you have never attended a Conscious Transformation Program, then the cost for this amazing weekend is only $200!

I have attached the registration form.  You can also call 720.446.5533 to get registered.  Or, you can also sign up by CLICKING HERE.
