What is a Cognoscopy?

How well is your brain working?  How’s your memory these days?  Is it as sharp as you would like? Do you feel like your brain is working as well as it used to?  Do you feel like your brain is stuck in first gear even when you’d like to kick it into 5th gear?  Do you walk into a room and then find yourself needing to take a few extra moments to remember why you went there to begin with?  Or, is your memory even worse than that? Are you justifying a noticeable decline in your brain function by saying "Oh, it’s just my age catching up with me, it's normal"?

The answer is that it is indeed your aging brain, but only in the sense that something needs fixing.  Your brain should run optimally until you’re in your 90’s.  You deserve that.

The most feared health condition is the fear of losing our memory because currently there is no widely recognized medical cure and more importantly, it robs people of their true self and abilities long before death actually occurs.  It’s also just plain frustrating!  And embarrassing.

While there still is no easy one pill cure to reboot your brain’s health, there is in fact emerging research that suggests there are safe therapies to improve your cognitive function to get your brain working well again.  Sadly, our standard medical system still does very little to help improve brain functioning, whether it be to simply kick a brain into 5th gear when needed or whether it be for advanced dementia.

Something to consider is to get a cognoscopy to measure how well your brain is actually functioning.  People are aware that they should get a colonoscopy after age 50 to check their colon, but for some reason people are not aware that their brain function can be tested by doing a quick and simple qEEG (qualitative electroencephalogram) which is often referred to as a brain map.  A brain map done in conjunction with a standardized computer neurocognitive test as part of a cognoscopy can be done to see exactly how well your brain is functioning.

Once the cognoscopy (brain map + neurocognitive testing) is done and if found to be non-optimal, then you may work with specific health professionals to discover what factors are too elevated or deficient so that you can learn how to bring those imbalances back into a healthy range.  That’s when cognitive improvement will be achieved.

Just a few of the many factors to consider include: micronutrient levels, hormones like testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, growth hormone, thyroid and adrenal hormones, neurotransmitters, genetics, inflammation, sugar, oxidized cholesterol, omegas, toxins like lead, aluminum, mercury, pesticides, mold biotoxins, infections, light hygiene, among many others.  There’s also lifestyle factors like stress, emotions, mental thought patterns, food choices, eating schedule, length and quality of sleep. These can all be monitored, tracked and improved.

If you currently are not completely happy with your brain, then consider starting with a cognoscopy (brain map + neurocognitive test).

Yes, you should be hopeful.  The latest science can be synthesized into a practical plan that can reverse cognitive decline and dramatically improve your brain health and function so that you can live a more enjoyable life.

Have a great week, and as always, please feel free to pass this along!

Dr. Yoshi's 12 Basic Steps for Anti-Aging Your Brain

This is the first in a series of videos I will be doing over the next few weeks called Dr. Yoshi's 12 Basic Steps for Anti-Aging Your Brain. I will be reviewing various factors that affect our brain, how we age, and our overall health.

In Step #1, I'm going to discuss packaged and processed foods. Are all packaged and processed foods unhealthy? How do they affect our long term health? How do they fit into a healthy lifestyle? How can we stop or reduce our consumption of these types of foods? What if we can't avoid these types of foods? Those are all good questions, and I have a few suggestions that can help along the way.

While health food stores have improved upon the usual processed foods we purchase from our neighborhood grocery, they still can contain things that aren't good for us. While most of us can't (or won't ;) cut out packaged and processed foods completely, we can educate ourselves and be more aware of ingredients that should be avoided. We all want to enjoy what we are eating, but it's wise to make sure it has good nutritional value. Being consciously aware of what we are putting into our bodies keeps us on the right path to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. So, my advice to you is... read the label! And then decide :)

Two ingredients to avoid as much as possible are sugars and vegetable oils. NEWSFLASH: Organic cane sugar isn't actually healthy. It is better than corn syrup, but it's still sugar. Many foods contain processed sugar in some form, so checking the ingredients for hidden forms of sugar or 'healthy' forms of sugar will help keep us on track. As I have said before, I consider vegetable oils to be a bigger problem than sugar. Sunflower oil, canola oil, corn oil, soybean oil, 'vegetable oil', peanut oil, cottonseed oil, and safflower oil can and will do harm to our bodies. And even once we quit consuming these oils, it can take a long time (months or even years) for our bodies to eliminate them from our system. So, get an oil change by purchasing foods that use healthier oils from coconut, avocado, ghee, high-quality pastured animal fats, or unheated olive oil.

So what do people who have great health and longevity tend to indulge in for those "guilty pleasures?" They consume foods that are naturally rich and healthy and high in nutritional value. Things like mold-free wine (disclosure: Dr. Yoshi does receive a small percentage as an affiliate, but this is the wine he mainly drinks when he does and it's what he'd recommend regardless) or pastured raw natural cheeses or organic fruit and nuts, to name a few.

One thing to consider is what triggers our reactions when dealing with what we put in our mouth. Pretty packaging can be pretty persuasive when we are in a vulnerable state (hungry, tired, stressed, unhappy). It is a good habit to pause, take a breath (or two), read the label (especially when shopping), and consider identifying the emotional state why we are choosing that food... and then we can make an informed conscious decision.

Don't get me wrong, it's okay to indulge in those guilty pleasures every so often, as long as it is in moderation and with conscious consideration. We're only human after all, right? Whether we choose to have "cheat days" or "cheat weekends" or some other conscious indulgence plan, it's best to actually HAVE a plan to avoid the guilt that comes later. That way, it's a bit easier to manage those times when we do indulge, knowing that it is okay too.

I hope this video series serves you well... Be on the lookout for Step #2 coming soon :)

Would you pass this test??

As you may (or may not) know, brain health is one of my passions. The brain is the most complex organ in the human body and plays a vital role in nearly every bodily function. When the brain is "broken," out of balance, or not working properly, it can affect our overall health in many ways and in varying degrees.

Here at Oasis Family Medicine, we offer Brain Mapping tests as part of our treatment services. The qualitative EEG, or Brain Mapping test can assist us in assessing brain function, check overall brain health, and correctly diagnose brain-related health issues. While MRIs and CAT Scans do show structural changes in the brain, they do not show how well the brain is functioning. That's where Brain Mapping comes in. There are several different types of brain waves (Beta, Alpha, Theta an Delta), each with their own purpose, and Brain Mapping helps measure these brain waves and shows how each area of the brain is functioning at appropriate times. Many of the health conditions related to poor brain function are:
  • ADHD & Learning Issues
  • Addiction & Abuse
  • Anxiety & Stress
  • Brain Injury & Concussion
  • Chronic Pain & Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Epilepsy & Seizures
  • Insomnia & Sleep Issues
  • Memory Loss
  • Migraines
  • Stroke
  • And More
If you (or someone you know) thinks that improper brain function may be a health issue, I highly recommend the brain mapping test. It provides valuable data to enable us to formulate the correct treatment plan for whatever health issues you are facing.

You can find out more about brain mapping on our website here, or feel free to contact the office at 818-957-6909. And be sure to watch the video below :)
