Hemorrhoids – Toilet – Squatty Potty

Hemorrhoids, everyone has them. Or at least at some point in your life just about all of you will. For those who aren’t exactly sure what a hemorrhoid is… hemorrhoids are also known as piles which are blood vessels and masses of supporting tissue inside the anal canal. Everyone technically has anatomical hemorrhoids, but sometimes they can become inflamed, which can be both irritating and painful.

Both men and women get them equally and while only about 1 in 25 people has them at any one point in time in the U.S., over 50% of those aged over 50 has to enjoy the annoyance that hemorrhoids provide.

Why do we get inflamed hemorrhoids?
  • Poor diet that is not high enough in fiber or water (constipation aggravates hemorrhoids)
  • Poor form while pooping (Yes, the modern day toilet is convenient, but has one major fault)

Interestingly, the reason that some 2nd and 3rd world countries have virtually zero inflamed hemorrhoids is likely because they eat better and squat while pooping.

Other risk factors associated with hemorrhoids:

  • Chronic constipation or diarrhea
  • Obesity and being overweight
  • Age
  • Pregnancy
  • Liver disease
  • Prolonged sitting
  • Heavy lifting

So how do we fix the pain-in-the-ass?

  • Eat plenty of veggies, fruit, and water
  • Poop while squatting

Other ways to avoid hemorrhoids:

  • Avoid foods that cause constipation like dairy, processed grains, and too much meat
  • Avoid dehydrating caffeine or alcohol
  • Use natural stool softeners whenever constipated (i.e. psyllium husk fiber with lots of water)
  • Exercise regularly
  • Avoid sitting for too long (this includes sitting in front of TV)
  • Don’t hold in bowel movements (go when nature calls!)
  • Do not strain during a bowel movement
  • Do not sit on the toilet for extended time periods (no reading on the throne!)
  • Void – I mean avoid heavy lifting

Back to squatting… Who wants to squat while pooping? That seems like too much of a hassle.

Introducing SQUATTY POTTY. Clean, comfy, and effective.

The way to go natural, but not too natural.

And who wouldn’t want the bag on our right each morning instead of the left???

This video is a couple minutes long butt teaches us so much about Squatty Potty (and so much more that I was never able to explain about rainbow soft serve ice cream).

The haiku mentioned in it sums it all up quite well:

“Oh squatty potty,
you fill me with endless joy,
yet leave me empty.”

If you care to purchase one, here’s the Squatty Potty website

Other of my favorite natural remedies include:

  • Witch hazel (commonly used to clean hemorrhoids naturally and help reduce pain & itching)
  • Warm showers (warm water relieves pressure; use conditioner rectally to soften – no soaps as they can further inflammation)
  • Sitz bath involves a small tub (bought at local pharmacy) that fits over a regular toilet and is used to easily soak hemorrhoids in warm water (can add witch hazel to it)
  • Cold compress (witch hazel sprayed on soft tissue then frozen is great) to the anus can relieve swelling, pain and itching.
  • Bottoms Up Balm
  • Homeopathic Avenoc suppositories

And, because I can…

Man, this blog was a pain in the butt to write. Cha-ching.

Cleaner Greener Flu Shot

Short of Middle East politics and immigration reform, few issues generate as much social friction and self-righteous rancor as childhood immunization policy

So now, more on flu vaccines :)

On the October 22nd blog I wondered aloud if the flu shot is the best option to prevent the flu.  Needless to say, I have not been impressed by the flu shot in the past.  Long have I wondered why they don’t make vaccines without all the crappy toxins in them.

That has changed now.  Introducing Flublok.  While conventional flu shots have many toxins (mercury, aluminum, formaldehyde, antibiotics, Polysorbate 80, MSG, egg protein) Flublok has none of these additives and is made using 3 times the amount of actual antigen (flu DNA that makes you immune to the flu)Flublok also does not require incubation in chicken eggs which greatly reduces the eco-footprint of the manufacturing process and eliminates the risk of bacterial contamination or egg allergen exposure.

The makers of Flublok state that it is completely free of heavy metals, formaldehyde, latex, antibiotics, gluten and egg residues.  And since it does not require use of actual live flu viruses, it is free of attenuated viral particles, unlike other flu shots.

This is as clean and green as a flu shot can get and is the way that I’d love to see all vaccines be made. Not gonna get into the nitty gritty of how conventional flu shots are made in this blog, but let’s just say that it involves (along with mercury, aluminum, formaldehyde, antibiotics) 3 eggs for each flu shot, bacteria, and flu-like-syndrome causing endotoxins.

Manon Cox, PhD, CEO of Protein Sciences who makes Flublok, believes her company has obviated most if not all concerns people have about vaccines - concerns that have been loudly emphasized by vaccine critics and unduly dismissed by equally vociferous vaccine advocates.

Watch a short simple 1 minute Flublok video here.  Or learn more about Flublok from their website here.

Flublok first became available late in 2014 and is approved for people aged 18 and older.

I am excited!  This kind of vaccine should have been made available to the public in the 1990’s or even 1980’s.  The technology was there, but the economic incentives were not made available by those that control such things.  Oh well.  At least it’s now finally available in the annual flu shot.

As of December 2015, Target Pharmacy is the only place you can get Flublok in the Los Angeles area.

Now, does all this mean Flublok is actually totally safe?  Frankly, it hasn’t been around long enough to know.  I wish I knew.  But, what I can say is that it certainly cleaner and greener and it seems like a much better option than all the other conventional flu shots.

Of course, lifestyle modifications are still the best way to avoid illness.  These beneficial lifestyle modifications include plenty of sleep, de-stressing, and healthy foods.  Well-balanced Vitamin D, zinc, glutathione, curcumin and Vitamin C are great to also help keep illness at bay.

If you do end up with the flu despite employing the above mentioned tactics, along with many herbal options, one can always come into the office for a Nutritional IV.

And as mentioned in my October post… If you do decide to get the Flublok vaccine, then there are some homeopathic remedies that one can take to mitigate potential side effects. (These are available in the office if you can’t find them at your local health food store.)

  • Thuja 5 pellets under tongue twice daily x 7 days after EVERY vaccination.
  • Influenzinum 5 pellets under tongue twice daily x 3 days for after flu vaccination.
  • Gelsemium 5 pellets under tongue twice daily x 3 days for after flu vaccination.

If you decide to get any other flu vaccine besides the Flublok, then I would also recommend:
  • Alumina 5 pellets under tongue three times daily x 7 days after EVERY vaccination with aluminum in them (if not sure, then take as precaution).

Once again, the decision to receive vaccinations of any kind is highly individualized. My goal, as always, is to empower you with the knowledge to make the best and most informed decision you can for yourself and your health.

O2 and Breathing

Oxygen. Quite simply it’s the most important nutrient to give your body. So… what’s the most helpful piece of medical advice that I can tell you to do? Quite simply, it’s to keep breathing as long as possible :) I say that kiddingly because it’s so obvious. I say that seriously because it’s not just that you breathe, it’s that you breathe properly. This even goes just a tick above learning to think properly. We breathe every minute of every day of our lives. As important as thinking right is, you can’t think if you don’t breathe for long. Breathing right is important. A few deep breaths can calm us like a shot of valium. Oxygenating well offers a fountain of youth.

Breathing well brings more oxygen to cells. Oxygen is life. Life is oxygen. Oxygen elevates mood. Oxygenating well increases mental clarity. It detoxifies your body.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that YOU (yes, you) DO NOT BREATHE RIGHT. And for those of you who do breathe right, you only do it right some of the time.

Breathing is both a conscious and unconscious body function.

We must learn to breathe properly and do it consistently to live optimally.

Improper: So, take a deep breath in and hold it. If you notice that your shoulders are tense, and your chest is out with your stomach mostly sucked in, then your breathing is not right.

Proper inhalation: Breathe from your belly (when inhaling, make your belly button go as far away from the spine as possible) and pretend that your abs, glutes, and back are doing the breathing for you. Take the chest out of it to begin with. Babies breathe with their stomach, not their chest. Be more baby-like in your breathing :)

Proper breathing: Breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds (using your abs, glutes, and your back), hold for 4 seconds, exhale out through your mouth for 4 seconds, hold exhalation for 4 seconds, and then repeat that cycle.

The right way: This is not the only right way to breathe. There are many techniques and timings that one can play with, but this is a simple version to do and I encourage you to spend just 1 minute each hour of your day to do this (that’s only 4 cycles of breathing each hour). It’ll lower your stress hormones, balance your neurotransmitters and just make a healthier you.

Breathing Boost: If you want to get extravagant and live on the edge, then you may place the tip of your tongue gently against the roof of your mouth just behind the upper teeth while you do your breathing exercise.

It's interesting that a simple way to test your longevity as it currently stands is to simply hold your breath for as long as you can (without passing out please). If you cannot hold it longer than 1 minute, then breathing exercises are a must for your longevity’s sake. If you cannot hold it longer than 2 minutes, then breathing exercises are still a great idea from a longevity standpoint.

Now I’m just going to boast a little and say that a few years ago, I held my breath for 4:16. That was in the pool with my head under water, so, yes, that time is truth.

Also, interesting is the fact that as of a couple years ago, my wife literally could not exhale for more than a few seconds despite her being a phenomenal athlete her entire life. She has learned since then through doing similar calming breathing exercises how to control her inhalations and exhalations and this has helped her in life in multiple ways. Very neat.

Enjoy the video below, and as always, free to pass it along!

Movember

I was lazy last week and didn’t shave (not an unusual occurrence, much to my wife’s dismay), then I realized that we were a good week into November, so after confirming that I last shaved on October 31st, I figured this would be a good first time for me to honor the Movember movement.

For those that don’t know, Movember, or “mustache November”, is a movement to raise awareness regarding men’s health issues, so I’ll specifically focus on prostate health.

Men’s prostates naturally get larger as they age.  This is called BPH (Benign Prostate Hypertrophy).  Because the prostate wraps around the urethra just below the bladder, when the prostate does get larger, it can cause common symptoms that include weaker urination stream, difficulty starting and/or stopping urination, more frequent urination, and dribbling at the end of urination.  BPH is not cancer, but it is annoying and can eventually lead to more serious conditions like recurrent kidney infections.

How about prostate cancer?  There’s a general rule of thumb that 60% of men aged 60 will have trace amounts of cancer cells in their prostates.  The vast majority of those who have prostate cancer cells do not ever even know they have prostate cancer.  However, prostate health should be taken seriously, since almost a quarter million men in the U.S. are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year and around 10% of them will die from it.  According to www.cancer.org, 1 man out of every 38 will die from prostate cancer.  Not good.

I’m all about prevention, and plenty of research suggests that dietary and lifestyle changes may help maintain and influence healthy prostate cells.  Of course, more research is needed, but some simple guidelines for overall prostate wellness are below.

Strategies to Support Prostate Health

  • Reduce Stress: Reducing stress balances stress hormones and equilibrates neurotransmitters ultimately causing less DNA damage and less cancer overall improving prostate health.
  • Eat a Low-Glycemic Diet: Insulin may exacerbate prostatic disease. Eating a low-glycemic diet with minimal processed carbohydrates does good for your prostate health.
  • Ample Veggies and Fruit: Veggies and Fruit give antioxidants and phytonutrients to your body and many phytonutrients have been implicated in prostate health.
  • Cook protein at Lower Temperatures and do not eat burning/charred foods: Cooking meat and charring any food increases the presence of harmful carcinogenic compounds that may negatively affect prostate health.
  • Exercise CONSISTENLY: Even if its moderate amounts each time and low-intensity, exercise still benefits prostate health.  Exercise aids the hormone balance, specifically the estrogen-testosterone relationship thereby aiding in prostate health.
  • Supplements: There is a growing body of research exploring the role of supplements in prostate health.  It’s likely that some extra concentrated doses of certain phytonutrients can benefit prostate health.  There are many prostate supplement options on the open market.  Just make sure you get a good quality brand and then monitor for changes in urination.  If you notice urination changes for the better, then the supplement might be worth continuing.  If you do not notice any changes, then it’s probably not worth your money to keep taking it.

To Get Or Not To Get The FLU Shot? ... and the best ways to cure the FLU if you do get it.

About a year ago, I wrote a blog about the flu.  And 'tis the season again for flu, so I’m gonna give you my new and improved version/answer for this topic.  Lots of good info to follow.

Social media outlets are frenzied over the flu shot debate (not to mention the vaccine debate in general).  “To get or not to get the flu shot”.  As a physician, I am often asked this exact question.  My answer is that it is a complicated decision and depends on your beliefs, your genetics, and your current health.  As an integrative physician, my goal is both to inform you and to get at the root cause of a condition and build your health from the ground up.

Like antibiotics, vaccines have been touted as a medical breakthrough that has saved many lives.  And they undoubtedly have!  However, the country’s one-size-fits-all, and sometimes extremely high number of mandatory, vaccination policies are not necessarily in the best interest of your individual health.

Many of the ingredients added into vaccines are known carcinogens and detergents that have harmful or unknown effects on the human body. Package inserts for Fluarix and Fluvirin even state that they are uncertain as to whether or not your fertility will be affected by the vaccine (fertility has been steadily declining over the past several decades).

Let’s learn more about what ingredients are in these vaccines and specifically, what is in the flu vaccine?

Aluminum gels or salts of aluminum, which are added as adjuvants to help the vaccine stimulate a better response to the vaccine.  Aluminum is a recognized neurotoxin that can adversely affect the central nervous system and cause cognitive deficiency and dementia if it enters the brain. Numerous studies have linked aluminum to Alzheimer’s disease.

Antibiotics, which are added to some vaccines to prevent the growth of germs (bacterial) during production and storage of the vaccine. The antibiotics hidden in the flu vaccine include neomycin, streptomycin, or penicillin, which can cause severe allergic reactions in many people.

Egg protein is found in influenza vaccines, which are prepared using chicken eggs.  Beware if you can’t eat egg products without poor reactions.

Formaldehyde is used to inactivate bacterial products for toxoid vaccines.  Formaldehyde is used in “inactivated” vaccines which are almost all of the flu vaccines available on the market.  It is also used to kill unwanted viruses and bacteria that might contaminate the vaccine during production. Formaldehyde is a powerful chemical used as a disinfectant and preservative in mortuaries and medical labs. It is listed as a human carcinogen in the 13th Report on Carcinogens published by the National Toxicology Program.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) and 2-phenoxy-ethanol, which are used as stabilizer in a few vaccines to help the vaccine remain unchanged when the vaccine is exposed to heat, light, acidity, or humidity.

Thimerosal is a mercury-containing preservative that is added to vials of vaccine that contain more than one dose to prevent contamination and growth of potentially harmful bacteria. Studies have demonstrated that thimerosal can contribute to the development of autoimmune diseases by suppressing the overall immune system and causing systemic inflammation. Due to the controversy concerning this additive, some companies have started producing thimerosal-free vaccines, which are available in a limited supply at certain pharmacies.  However, most of these “thimerosal-free” vaccines have less mercury in them they actually still have some mercury in them that are technically still at toxic levels.

Polysorbate 80 is a detergent used to help drugs and chemicals cross the blood-brain barrier. Unfortunately, this stabilizer is also used to treat chronic kidney failure and can contribute to liver toxicity. Polysorbate 80 was also shown to cause “severe non-immunologic anaphylactoid reactions” in this study from 2005.

Do you really want these potentially toxic substances injected into your body, or worse, your child’s body?

Now, let’s look at the flu vaccine’s effectiveness in preventing illness.

According to the CDC, the 2014-2015 flu vaccine had reduced an individuals risk of visting a doctor due to the flu by 23%.  That does not mean that it was 23% effective.  It just means that it reduced flu symptoms enough to avoid wanting to go to the doctor by 23% (BTW that is about the rate of placebo).  Going back in time a little more, according to a study in 2008, the influenza vaccine was only 59% successful and benefited only 36% of the healthy children over the age of 2 who received it. Another study from 2008 indicated that the number of children’s doctor visits or hospitalizations did not differ between vaccinated and non-vaccinated children measured over two consecutive flu seasons, suggesting that the influenza vaccine had very little effect on children’s overall health status. Additional studies show that flu vaccines do not prevent influenza transmission to the patients of healthcare workers.  To be fair, the rate is reportedly higher in other years.

The bottom line is that vaccination is not a foolproof way to avoid disease.  The shots do cause side effects, and sometimes those side effects are serious.

The NVIC (National Vaccine Information Center) continues to ask “is the atypical manipulation of the immune system with more and more vaccines in early life setting some children up for chronic disease and disability?  Is less better?”

They point out that American children are the most highly vaccinated children in the world (receiving 49 doses of 14 vaccines before the age of 6), and are also among the most chronically ill and disabled.  The CDC admits that one in six U.S. children is now developmentally delayed.  During the past quarter century, the number of children with learning disabilities, ADHD, asthma, and diabetes has more than tripled.  More than twice as many children have chronic brain and immune system dysfunction today than did in the 1970s when half as many vaccines were given to children.

According to Dr. Gary Goldman’s study there was a 4,250% increase in fetal deaths associated with mercury in the swine flu vaccine shot given to pregnant women.

Number of reactions from flu shots, reported to VAERS: 93,000

Number of deaths following a flu shot according to VAERS: 1,080

Number of days of missed work saved by getting the flu shot: 0.13 days according to (Cochrane).

According to the CDC, this study, suggests that 40,125 lives were saved by the flu vaccine over a 9 year period and that about 88% of those were in people older than 65 years of age.

You be your own judge.  Everything in medicine is risks versus benefits.

Natural Alternatives for Preventing & Treating the Flu (or a simple cold):

The best treatment for any flu (or cold) is always prevention, which includes supporting your immune system. Eating well, getting proper rest and exercise are paramount. What else can the average busy American do to minimize their chances of getting sick this fall and winter?

Here are some simple suggestions:

Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly
This is the number one way to prevent the flu and other respiratory infections.  You must scrub your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds in order to kill viruses. Twenty seconds is about how long it takes to sing the ABC’s one time through. Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth without first washing your hands.

Heal your gut
Your gut is the gateway to health.  80% of your immune system is located in your gut. Make sure your gut is in good shape and take a high quality, multi-strained probiotic.

Reduce alcohol and sugar consumption
Even moderate alcohol consumption suppresses the central nervous system, and therefore your immune system. Consuming too much sugar can suppress the immune system and make it more difficult for your body to fight off infections like the flu.

Reduce your stress
Stress is known to suppress our immune systems. Consider meditation, yoga, or acupuncture for additional relaxation techniques.  Did you know that 1 minute of laughter elevates your immune system response for up to 24 hours?  Meanwhile 1 minute of anger depresses your immune system response for up to 6 hours?  I guess if you come in contact with a person who you realize has the flu/cold then maybe the best medicine might be to go to a comedy show or watch your favorite comedy movie or just invite your funniest friend over… but don’t tell them you have the flu  ;-)

Get 7-9 hours of sleep every night
Your body relies on sleep to recuperate from daily exposure to toxins. Chronic sleep deprivation can significantly reduce immune function.

Take glutathione, turmeric, and liposomal vitamin C
Antioxidants are very important for your immune function. Glutathione is the chief antioxidant in your body, responsible for enhancing your immune system and helping your liver with detoxification. Curcumin is the orange pigment in turmeric and a potent antioxidant that improves joint health and cardiovascular function. Vitamin C provides potent antioxidant protection, and supports optimal immune function.

Eat a clove of garlic every day
Give your immune system an added boost with garlic. It's cheap, easy and effective. Using parsley with garlic when you cook will diminish the garlic taste.

Optimize vitamin D
Vitamin D is a powerful immune system modulator.  Optimal levels for best immunes system function range from 50 to 70 ng/mL.  For many that can mean taking 5000 IU per day; however, I don’t recommend this unless you are followed closely by a physician and if you do take it, then it should be balanced out with the K vitamins to create optimal vitamin D homeostasis in the body.

Consider a zinc supplement
Zinc is another powerful antioxidant that plays a crucial role in immune health. Within the immune system, zinc is needed for gene regulation and functioning of neutrophils, natural killer cells, and lymphocytes. Individuals with a zinc deficiency are highly susceptible to a number of pathogens, including the influenza virus.

Get plenty of exercise
Exercise can boost your immune system by increasing your circulation and relieving stress. Increased circulation allows antibodies to travel throughout your bloodstream faster, making it easier for your immune system to fight off an illness. Exercise can also enhance your immune system by relieving stress and slowing the release of stress hormones in the body.  Exercise should be mild to moderate in intensity (not vigorous) from a purely immune system stand point.

Start your day with a fresh squeezed glass of lemon water and raw honey.
The lemon helps to alkalinize the body and the raw honey contains natural antibiotics and antifungals.  Raw honey is also an excellent cough suppressant.

Despite your best efforts, if you still feel that you are coming down with something, or it's progressing quickly, call us right away (818-957-6909) for one of the IV’s mentioned below.

Many people opt for the wait-and-see approach. Sometimes this works, but if you wait too long, you can end up much sicker and recovering for quite a while longer than if you started treatment sooner.

Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide can be given as an IV, and is very effective for respiratory infections.  If given at the first sign of a respiratory illness, an IV of hydrogen peroxide can typically abort an infection.

Immune Drip
Vitamin/Mineral IVs:  Has vitamins and minerals in it, specifically high dose vitamin C, which is particularly effective for respiratory and viral infections.

Ozone therapy
Ozone therapy has been safely and effectively used in European countries for decades.  It works for both acute and chronic infections but is particularly effective for viral infections.

These IV treatments are great if you find yourself sick with the flu, a cold, or another viral/bacterial infection.

If you get the flu, please also take homeopathic Oscillococcinum 1 vial every 20-30 minutes for a few hours until severe symptoms taper off then take 1 vial every 1-3 hours until all better.

So, Who Should Get a Flu Shot?

There is quite a quandary surrounding recommendations for immunocompromised individuals such as those with autoimmune diseases who are on immune-suppressing medications. The original thought was that they would be at higher risk of getting the flu and would benefit from getting vaccinated. However, recent studies have shown that the flu vaccine is less effective in these immunocompromised individuals.  Given that thimerosal has been implicated in triggering autoimmune disease and that those with autoimmune diseases are three times more likely to develop another autoimmune disease, it would seem that the risk of getting a flu vaccine far outweighs any potential benefits.

Certainly those with chronic lung diseases like cystic fibrosis, asthma, or COPD may want to weigh the risk with the benefits, as it might be potentially life-saving in those individuals.

If you do elect to receive a flu shot, I would highly recommend a thimerosal-free vaccine (still has some thimerosal in it though), which are available in a limited supply. If you don’t already know your MTHFR gene mutations, I would definitely get them checked. If you have any mutations at this gene, it is difficult for your body to eliminate mercury from your system, even in trace amounts.  I would also caution you against taking any over-the-counter pain medications, such as tylenol, advil, or aspirin, in conjunction with your vaccine. These have been shown to reduce the effectiveness of vaccines by limiting your body’s proper immune response.

If you do decide to get the flu vaccine, then most CVS or Walgreens type of minute-clinics or urgent care facilities are happy to do it.

If you do decide to get the flu vaccine, then there are some homeopathic remedies that one can take to mitigate potential side effects (these are available in the office if you can’t find them at your local health food store.)
  • Thuja 5 pellets under tongue twice daily x 7 days after EVERY vaccination.
  • Alumina 5 pellets under tongue three times daily x 7 days after EVERY vaccination with aluminum in them (if not sure then take as precaution).
  • Influenzinum 5 pellets under tongue twice daily x 3 days for after flu vaccination.
  • Gelsemium 5 pellets under tongue twice daily x 3 days for after flu vaccination.

Once again, the decision to receive vaccinations of any kind is highly individualized. My goal, as always, is to empower you with the knowledge to make the best and most informed decision you can for yourself and your health.

Free Docu-Series & Truly Heal

In last week’s blog, I spoke about The Big “C” – Cancer.

This week I’d like to send you to this Truly Heal website.  The emphasis is on cancer, but it applies to helping anyone and everyone with their health.  They also offer a Free Cancer Guide on their site.  It has very solid principles and I highly encourage you to pass this site along to anyone with chronic health issues, but especially if they are dealing with cancer.  If someone gets even one useful nugget of info from the Truly Heal website, then it’s totally worth it.  Likely, they’ll get many nuggets of healing info.

Also, for an edgier audience, a 9-part docu-series called The Truth About Cancer – A Global Quest started airing on Tuesday, October 13th, with 1 part airing each night for free.  Below are the episodes listed in order.  Don’t quote me, but I’ll bet he (Ty Bollinger) offers it all at the end for a short time period (also for free) to watch any episodes you may have missed.

As always, please feel free to pass this link along, especially this week’s blog, to those who might benefit.  You might make a huge difference in their lives.
